When a property has been damaged, you’ll likely want to file a property insurance claim. Whether the damage is caused by a natural disaster, a burglary, or some other unexpected event, understanding the process of filing a property claim can make it easier to get the compensation you need to recover.
Understanding Property Claims
A property claim is a type of insurance claim used to repair or reimburse for the costs of damage to personal property, such as a home or business. Property claims are typically filed with an insurance company, and the insurance company is then responsible for ascertaining the cost of the damage and providing the policyholder with the full coverage amount.

Common Types of Property Claims
Property claims are commonly divided into three distinct types:

Property damage claims
Property damage claims are those related to the physical damage or destruction of a property due to an accident, fire, or another such natural or human-caused event.

Property casualty claims
Property-casualty claims are those related to personal injury or property loss caused by a third party, such as in a car accident or slip-and-fall accident.

Field property claims
Field property claims are those related to the loss of property that occurs while the property is in the process of being moved from one place to another, such as via a ship, train, or truck.

The Insurance Claim Process
When filing a property insurance claim, the policyholder will generally need to provide the insurance company with proof of the damage, including documentation of the event that caused the damage and bill-of-sale statements for the items damaged. In addition, the policyholder may need to provide the insurance company with photographs of the damaged property, and an appraisal if the property is of a high value. All of this information will be used to determine the value of the claim, as well as the compensation that the policyholder can expect from the insurance company.
The Claims Adjuster
Once the policyholder has submitted the insurance claim, the insurance company will assign a claims adjuster. The claims adjuster is responsible for evaluating the policyholder’s evidence, confirming the damage, and providing a written analysis of the claim. The claims adjuster will also make recommendations to the insurance company on how the claim should be paid out.

The Claims Review
Finally, the insurance company will conduct a review of the claims adjuster’s written analysis and determine whether the policyholder is eligible for the full coverage amount. This review process typically takes several days, and the policyholder will be notified of the outcome in writing.
